A TikToker sent his dog’s ashes into space alongside his favorite Toy Story alien using a homemade device before tracking it back down to Earth.
The creator, known online as The Battersby, documented the tribute to his dog Oscar – launching his remains inside a balloon with the Toy Story toy along for the ride – by recording the entire journey with an attached £500 (around $660) 360-degree camera and a pet GPS tracker.
Battersby organised the launch with ZoomiTag, who explained, “The ZoomiTag did exactly what it’s designed to do on every much smaller adventure […] It reported its location continuously, held a strong signal through the descent, and gave us a live blue dot on a map to drive to.”
The flight took place on May 7, 2026, fulfilling Battersby’s promise to show Oscar the world.

Footage captured by the camera showed Oscar’s ashes rising above the clouds and, eventually, into low orbit above Earth.
Explaining how the device worked, Battersby said: “The ashes were in the balloon. When the balloon popped due to the pressure in that atmosphere, the ashes spread and the box floated back down.”
Initially, the TikToker lost the vessel’s whereabouts, thinking the GPS tracker attached to the device had malfunctioned and worried that the footage had been lost.
However, the tracker eventually pinged while he and his friends were sitting in a pub, prompting them to race to the indicated landing site.
After climbing over a fence and searching through grass and nettles, they spotted the device in a field with the camera still recording.
“Bro, we’ve done it,” Battersby said after recovering the device. “Life has never been that kind to me. But today, something wanted me to know he made it up there.” The TikToker confirmed Oscar’s ashes had been released during the flight.

“Oscar, I’ve now shown you the world, like I promised,” he said, later dedicating the finished video to his “own little space oddity.”
While Oscar now belongs to the cosmos, one dog owner wishing to memorialize their pet adopted the novel approach of wearing eyeliner made from her dog’s ashes so that they were “always with her.”
